100 Legacies in the Making

Lori Walker, Savannah Smith, and Gayle SmothermanFACS Ambassadors Lori Walker (Senior, Nutrition Science and Dietetics), Savannah Smith (Sophomore, Furnishings and Interiors) and Gayle Smotherman (Sophomore, Human Development and Family Science) helped host the 100 Legacies in the Making campaign celebration in August. A total of 106 donors documented a planned gift during the campaign period.

Student News

Rebecca Bengle (Master’s Student, Foods and Nutrition) has been awarded the Patsy Jane O’Malley Scholarship and received the Healthy Aging Dietetic Practice Group Student Research award from the American Dietetic Association Foundation.

Stephanie Chapman (Master’s Student, Housing and Consumer Economics), Jason Eagle (Senior, Family Financial Planning), George Williams James (Senior, Family Financial Planning) and Amanda Minter (Junior, Housing and Family Financial Planning) were four of six students to receive awards from the Arthur Caple Foundation to attend the National Association of Government Defined Contribution Administrators annual conference. Chapman received a $1,000 scholarship, while the other students received travel stipends and conference registration.

Ruthie Neustifer (PhD Student, Human Development and Family Science) is the 2008-09 recipient of the Jewell Taylor National Fellowship from the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. This is her second year to receive the fellowship.

Desiree Seponski (PhD Student, Human Development and Family Science) has been awarded the Virginia M. Smith Award by the Georgia Gerontology Society.

Luciana Silva (PhD Student, Human Development and Family Science) has been awarded a $25,000 minority fellowship from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

Stephanie Sinnett (Master’s Student, Foods and Nutrition) has been awarded the Northeast Georgia Dietetic Association Scholarship.

The Student Association of Family and Consumer Sciences was awarded the 2008 Community Service Award at this year’s American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences conference. Their winning project, called Improving Our Communities at Home and Abroad, included collecting books for the Boys and Girls Club of Athens as a part of the club’s annual book drive and sending letters, magazines and cookies to U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Jihyun Sung  (PhD Student, Human Development and Family Science) has been awarded a postdoctoral research associate position at Brown University. She will join a multidisciplinary research team studying gender role development in infancy and early childhood.

Brandy Dachenhausen Thompson (Senior, Consumer Economics) and her husband, Doug, are the parents of Elizabeth Jane Thompson, born June 6. Their other children are Hannah, Lilly Grace and Noah. The family currently lives in Spartanburg, SC.
