Marriage and Family Therapy Ph.D. Program Admissions Requirements

The Marriage and Family Therapy program at the University of Georgia seeks to admit students from a diversity of backgrounds.  This approach enhances learning and encourages a strong cohort that can work well together.  Prospective students are screened for their academic, research and clinical excellence.

Academic excellence
Doctoral studies are strenuous and require a strong determination. Your abilities in academics can be demonstrated prior to application in a number of ways, including performance in areas such as education, work, and volunteerism.  Evidence of commitment, responsibility and perseverance is essential. Letters of reference are very important, and your GPA and GRE scores are also considered.

Research excellence
The University of Georgia places a strong emphasis on research and the MFT program is no exception.  Students are highly involved in research projects, both as assistants to faculty and as emerging researchers.  The program offers an emphasis on both qualitative and quantitative research, with required classes in both. While students need not be strong in both areas, many do demonstrate an interest in both methodologies.  Prospective students will be evaluated on their research experience.  Students who have not had the opportunity to gain research experience will be evaluated on the potential to be successful.

Clinical excellence
Whether students holds a bachelor’s or master’s degree upon entering the program, they will receive excellent, yet challenging, clinical training tailored to their needs and strengths.  A high comfort level for working with diverse people from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences is important.   To be successful, prospective students should have experiences dealing with others in difficult situations.  Prior clinical experience, volunteer work, and other experiences working with others are important.  We value the development of clinical skills and we value supporting our community. As such, we are involved in a number of projects in the community, including working with the shelter for battered women, juvenile offenders, churches, and many others.
