The Prison Pipeline: The Criminalization of America's Children

At this event, participants viewed portions of the documentary "The Intolerable Burden," which was followed by a discussion of the recent trend in secondary and even primary schools of involving the correctional system in the disciplining of our youth and of implications for policy and practice. Speakers included the documentary's producer, Constance Curry; Sharon Hill, director of Georgia Appleseed; Professor Ed Risler (UGA School of Social Work); Professor Leslie Simons (UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences); and Professor Ron Simons (UGA Department of Sociology). In addition, the event served as a kick-off to a statewide research symposium on the topic held on October 13, 2008.
