Service Learning in Secondary English Education
Professors Peter Smagorinsky and George L. Boggs teach Service Learning in Secondary English Education (ELAN 3461) in the Department of Language and Literacy Education. This course involves placing UGA students in the College of Education who aspire to teach secondary school English in a tutoring relationship with a community member whose cultural background and life experiences are substantially different from their own.
Mentoring and Tutoring
Through the Center for Latino Achievement and Success in Education (CLASE), students are encouraged to take part in tutoring and mentoring programs serving Athens-area Latino communities. Programs involve mostly elementary and middle school students in both school and community programs and provide them with homework assistance, social support, and literacy/English development. For more information about CLASE, visit www.coe.uga.edu/clase/tutoring.
Dr. Paul Matthews's courses (ELAN 4620/6620 and 4620E/6620E) assist tutors in deepening their knowledge about effective tutoring. Along with a class component, all students tutor Latino students one to three afternoons per week at approved community or school locations. For more information about this course, visit www.coe.uga.edu/clase/ELAN_4620-6620.html.
