Intergenerational Studies in Cambodia
The Intergenerational Studies in Cambodia study tour is a six-week service-learning program directed by Dr. Denise Lewis. It is designed to provide students with hands-on experience working with multiple generations of impoverished families in Cambodia. Students develop a global perspective on intergenerational relations and families and an awareness of the influence of historical, biological, physiological, psychological, cultural, and social factors on families. They also gain an understanding of and apply theories and academic concepts to real-life situations of impoverished families in Cambodia. While studying in Cambodia, students work with impoverished children in elementary schools, orphanages, and nutrition centers and with adult family members in skills learning centers. In collaboration with faculty and students at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, staff and teachers in elementary schools in Cambodia, and Dr. Lewis, they also develop educational activities for the children in the elementary schools and in the orphanages. Preventing Early Obesity through Education: A Program for Latino Children
Dr. Silvia Giraudo, associate professor in the Department of Food and Nutrition, and Dr. Julia Reguero de Atiles, who holds a joint appointment in the Department of Child and Family Development in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and in Elementary and Social Studies Education in the College of Education, just completed a service-learning project with students in Athens and Mexico. The purpose of the project was to provide Latino children in the Athens area with culturally competent nutritional counseling as prevention of childhood obesity. In order to achieve this goal, UGA students visited Mexico to learn about nutrition, early childhood education, and Latino culture. In partnership with the Department of Nutrition from the Hospital Civil "Dr. Luis F. Nachón" and the Jardín de Niños "Experimental" Anexo a la Benemérita Escuela Normal Veracruzana in Xalapa, Mexico, the UGA students were immersed in health and educational settings where they learned necessary information to develop educational materials. UGA students implemented the educational materials and nutrition-counseling sessions prepared in Mexico with the local Latino community in Athens on October 26, 2008. The students gained practical experience through their service-learning project and helped empower the Latino community in Georgia.
