IBR Faculty Mentoring Program

IBR hopes to provide an environment that will help those who are trying to write proposals for extramural support for the first time. Applicants to the mentoring program are selected to be "ready" to submit RO1 proposals as the principal investigator. Readiness is gauged both in terms of an existing track record of publications and a potentially fundable area of interest. Participants will be formally paired for 12 months with one or more senior faculty members (mentor). The mentor(s) will make him/herself available to provide guidance in developing a grant proposal to be submitted for extramural funding. The mentor(s) will help identify sources of funding. The project is expected to be based on the ideas and interest of the mentee.

Each mentor(s)/mentee pair will work out a schedule of meetings that best meets their own schedules and needs. In addition, there will be a series of program seminars concerning research funding in the social and behavioral sciences. We envision seminars concerning Government Funding Opportunities, Working with Private Foundations, Resources and Procedures in the University of Georgia Research Office, and other topics suggested by the Fellows in this program.

Diverse Faculty Mentoring Program

The Office of Institutional Diversity is launching a diverse faculty mentoring program which will connect incoming faculty with faculty mentors campus‐wide. This program is intended to be a useful way of helping new faculty members adjust to the University of Georgia and the surrounding community. Assistance and support from a senior diverse faculty member, outside of the department, can be an invaluable supplement to the successful integration of a new faculty member by socializing new faculty in four essential areas:

  1. Navigating potential challenges to success that are unique to diverse faculty such as cultural taxation and tokenism, feelings of isolation, and unintended bias
  2. Adopting academic values at a Research I university
  3. Managing an academic career and other responsibilities
  4. Establishing and maintaining a productive network of colleagues inside and outside the university

The program’s success will depend on the new faculty members and their mentors both taking an active role in the acclimation process. The overarching goal is to not only promote professional success, but to also retain highly qualified faculty from historically underrepresented groups and grow diversity at UGA.

IBR Grant Writing Tips

IBR’s grant writing tips offers suggestions about writing proposals. Along with concrete suggestions about how to approach the grant writing process and ways to set targets to keep you on track throughout the process of grant writing, IBR also provides suggestions about putting together budgets and links to helpful websites at NIH and NSF. Hopefully, these resources will be useful as you get started, and more importantly, as you persevere, in your proposal writing efforts.
