How can files be transferred (via ftp) to and from those outside of FACS that are too large for email attachments?

Colleagues outside of the college can retrieve and send files using FTP on the FACS server Hestia working on the T: Drive.

  • If you want to have your colleagues access a file, first save the file you wish to have available to the T: Drive on Hestia
  • Send email to your colleague, telling them to point their Web Browser to ftp://guest@hestia.fcs.uga.edu
  • When requested, have them enter the password fileexpress
  • They will now see everything that is in the T: Drive

The following shows how to Retrieve and Send files from and to FACS from outside of the college using Internet Explorer and Firefox

Retrieving Files

Enter URL:

  • Enter password and click OK

  • You will now see a Web view of the contents of the FACS T: drive.

  • To download a file, Right-Click on the file and select Copy to Folder

    (ie-fileexpress4.gif)

  • Select a place to save the file.

Sending Files

  • Using Internet Explorer 6 you can simply drag a file from your desktop to Internet Explorer to upload the file.
  • Using Internet Explorer 7 you must select View->Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer

Retrieving Files

  • Enter URL:

  • Enter password and click OK

  • You will now see a Web view of the contents of the FACS T: drive.

  • To download a file, Right-Click on the file, and select Save Link Target As

    Select a place to save the file.

Sending Files

  • Go to File->Upload File (Note: for Firefox versions 3.x and above, you'll need the FireFTP Addon - go to Tools -> AddOns and search for FireFTP)

  • Select the File to Upload

  • You'll have to Reload the page to see the results.
