2.1 The Student Computer Labs
In order to use any machine in the Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Computer Labs, you must be a member of FCS. This means you must be a faculty, staff, or student of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Your membership is verified through the log in process.
The Log In Process: Each member of The College has an account on our Netware Server. In order to acesses the lab computers, you must log in to your account. To Log Out: Double Click on the Logout Icon.
To
Log In:
- Enter your 9 digit Social Security Number in Name box.
- Enter your 6 digit birthday(mmddyy) as your password.
- Click OK
- You will also have to accept the Lab Policies before you can continue with the log in process. When you see a screen with the policies listed, hit "Enter" to agree to them.
- If you are a member of the college and entered your information correctly, and are unable to log in, please see the Network Administrator.
Once you have logged in successfully, you will have access to all applications on the machine.
Logging Out of The Lab Machines
Once you have finished using any application in the Computer Lab, you must Log Out of the computer.
Why You should Log Out of the Lab Machines- Security: Any computer left logged on is insecure. Your account information (i.e. name and social security number) is easily veiwed by anyone who sits down to machine you have left on.
- Consideration for Others: The log out process involves the machine shutting down and rebooting. It must also go through a scanning process before it will allow another user to log in. Please remember that other user's of the lab are working under time constraints. If someone else has to log out of your account before they can access their own, you have cost that person valuable time.
- Printing: Each member of The College has a 400 page print quota. If you leave your machine logged in, and someone prints from your account, your quota will be met and you will eventually have to pay for printing. Please see the section on printing for more information.
2.2 Printing in the Student Computer Labs
All members of the College have a Print Quota. Every member of this college is allowed to print 400 pages for free.
Printing is tracked by account. When you log into a computer in the student lab, you have activated your account. Every time you print, a time- stamped print record is created.
If you meet your quota, you must pay to have it reset. If you try to print after you have met your quota, you will get an error message. To reset your quota, you must write a check in the amount of ten ($ 10) dollars. Computer Services does not accept cash, debit/ credit cards, or check cards.
Each individual is responsible for his/ her own account. To prevent illegal use of your quota, Log Out of any computer you have been using before you leave the lab.
Be Aware of these Printing Issues
- All printers are set to print double- sided (duplexed). Do not change the print settings on any computer in the lab. If you are printing something that must be single- sided, send the document to the printer one page at a time.
- Printers are subject to miscellaneous problems. If the printer is jammed, out of paper, or out of toner, ask a student worker or the lab manager for assistance.
- Do not add any paper to the printers. The feed mechanisms on the printers are very sensitive. Do not add personal paper (letterheads, higher- grade paper, etc.) to any printer in the Computer labs. If the printer is out of paper, ask for assistance.
- Do not press print more than once unless directed to do so. Choosing print does not give an immediate response. Sending your document multiple times will only make the problem worse. If you feel you have waited too long, ask for assistance.
2.3 General Computer Lab Policies Computing
Do not under any circumstance install or download any software onto the computers in the student computer labs. Adding other programs jeopardizes the stability of the computers. Anyone found installing software will lose all computer lab privileges.
Food and Drink
Each student computer lab has a designated area for food and drink. Food and drink are not allowed anywhere else in the student computer labs. Any violators of this policy will be asked to leave.
Lost and Found
Each student computer lab has a box clearly marked Lost and Found. Any item left behind in the computer labs will be placed in the box. Any computer related items (disks, headphones, etc.) become public property after 1 week. Public property remains so until the owner claims it.
Computer Services does not guarantee the quality or condition of any item designated as public property.
Family
The computer labs are for members of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Therefore, no spouse, significant other, or children are allowed in the Computer labs. The fact that your spouse, significant other, or child may be working on a project or assisting with a project does not qualify as an exception to this rule.
Children
For insurance and safety reasons, no children under the age of 17 are allowed in the student computer labs (unless they are part of a tour through campus).

3.3 Printing In the Computer Labs
In the Fall of 1999 UCNS announced that students would have to pay a per- page fee for its printing services. FCS Computer Services understands the inconvenience of this policy for our students, faculty and staff. Therefore, we have instituted a separate print policy involving a quota system.
The Print Quota System
Each student, faculty member, and staff member of the College is assigned a quota of 400 pages per semester. The quota is tracked through the computer log in. Once the student reaches their 400- page limit, he/ she will be unable to print. The student will see a message box informing him/ her that the quota has been reached and to see the Lab Manager. In order to have the quota reset the student must write a check for ten ($ 10) dollars made payable to Computer Services.
A Usage Scenario for the Print Quota System
Student 1 enters the computer lab. She logs onto the computer using her Social Security number and birth date. She creates a five- page paper and then prints it. Her quota is now at 395. She closes all applications and leaves the lab with out logging out of the computer.
Student 2 enters the lab. He sits down at the computer vacated by Student 1. He does not log out of the account. Instead, he writes a 10- page paper and prints. Student 1 now has a quota of 385. Because student 1 did not log out, Computer Services can not differentiate between the two users.
Student 1 continues to print from her account. She also continually forgets to log out of the computer. One day rather early in the semester, she tries to print a paper. Instead of a print dialog box, she sees a message box. She is informed that her quota has been met and that she must see the lab manager to have her quota reset. She will now have to write a check (no cash, debit/ credit/ check cards) for ten ($ 10) dollars in order to reset her quota for the remainder of the semester.
Policies Regarding the Quota System
- Quotas are not transferable to another person. It is against the University's Computing Policy for any student, faculty, or staff member to allow another person access to their personal accounts. If you knowingly allow another person to use your account, both of you are in violation of University Policy (see Campus Computing).
- Quota cannot be transferred to a different semester. A quota that has been reset or has not reached its limit does not "roll over" to the following semester. All quotas are reset at the beginning of each semester.
- Computer Services is not responsible if your quota is met illegally. The account owner is the only person who can prevent illegal use of the account. To prevent illegal usage, log out every time you use a lab computer.
- Any students caught illegally using someone else's account must be reported immediately to Computer Services. The only way to aid Computer Services in correcting illegal usage of student accounts is to report it when you see it happening.
The Computer Services Helpdesk
4.1 Finding Help in the Computer Labs Lab Assistants
Throughout the school year, Computer Services employs students on either a student worker or work- study basis as lab assistants. Each of the students sets up a station in one of the three computer labs. The students are trained to help you with your computer needs. If you have a question that the lab assistant cannot immediately answer, s/ he is qualified to work with you until the both of you find the answer. If they cannot find the answer, they can direct you to a manual, or ask the lab manager for assistance.
To identify a lab assistant, look for this sign
The Lab Manager
Chasity McWilliams is the lab manager for Computer Services. Her desk is located in the Center office (Dawson 200) of the Computer Services Suite. If there is not a Lab Assistant present, or if they are unable to help you, feel free to ask her for help.
4.2 Support Outside of the Lab Environment
If you need computer assistance and you are not in the computer lab, please email the helpdesk (helpdesk@ fcs. uga. edu). The easiest and most time efficient way to make sure your request is answered is to email it. We only accept phone or walk in requests if your email is not working. At that time, the lab manager will submit an email on your behalf. This is the only way we have to track the hundreds of requests we receive on a daily basis.
Resources Provided to the College
5.1 Equipment
Currently, Computer Services provides the following equipment to the College. All equipment is available through reservation only. To reserve equipment go to: www. fcs. uga. edu/ cs from there, click "Reserve Equipment/ Lab" once you submit the request you will receive a response before the day is over.
Equipment Availability
IBM Thinkpad Laptops 4 - Reservation Only
LCD Projectors 4 - Reservation
Only
Nikon Mavica Digital Camera 1 - Reservation Only
5.2 Lab Reservations
An instructor may reserve one of two computer labs for a class, presentation, exam, or any other appropriate use. A reserved lab will be closed five minutes before the reservation starts. We also place signs on the lab's doors stating that the lab is closed and when it will reopen. As this is a very popular resource at certain points during the semester, you should make your reservations early in the semester.
To reserve a computer lab for class use, please submit a reservation request via the web (www.fcs.uga.edu/reservations/ then click "Reserve Equipment/ Lab"). It is very important that we know how many students we will need to accommodate when you submit your reservation. If you would like help with your class, please say so in the "Comments" section of the form.
5.3 Testing Services
Computer Services maintains an 8200 model ScanTron machine in Lab 201. This machine is available for use by all members of the College. Graduate students may access it 24 hours a day as long as they have had previous training on the proper use of the machine. In order for the test scoring to work properly, please note the following:
- You must make an appointment to use the machine for the first time. In that appointment, you will be trained on how to use the machine and its software.
- If you think you may need help at any time while you are scoring, you must make an appointment before you grade the tests. There are only 2 CS staff members that have experience with the ScanTron equipment. Both people have extremely busy day- to- day schedules. If you need help you must reserve their time in advance.
- You must order testing forms from Computer Services. The ScanTron machine only grades certain types of forms. Every semester, the lab manager sends email to the College requesting that orders be placed for the semester.
- You must bring a floppy disk. The machine will not grade without a disk.
