Secure vs. Insecure Attachment

Photograph of Secure ChildThrough the experience of positive bonding and attaching, a child becomes securely attached and learns to trust that other people will support her. A child who is securely attached trusts others, while a child who is insecurely attached does not trust easily.

A child who is securely attached tends to:

  • have less extreme reactions to stress
  • be more willing to try new things and to explore independently
  • be a better problem solver and
  • form better relationship with others

A child who is insecurely attached may:

  • refuse to interact with others or avoid other people
  • exaggerate distress and/or
  • show anger, anxiety or fear

It is important to note that attachment security is not the only factor that affects the abilities listed above, either for a securely or for an  insecurely attached child.  A variety of other influences including individual personality differences and cultural norms also affect a child's process for relating to others, responding to stress and solving problems, and managing emotions.
