Frequently Asked Questions
Brain Research
- Where does your information on brain development come from?
- Better Brains for Babies uses the most updated research on early brain development in our workshops, print information, and website. We have developed an interactive Flash presentation and in-depth Trainer’s Guide that our trainers use to share research on brain development with audiences across the state. Our executive committee scans current research reports for updated information on the brain. Trainers share updates with each other through a trainer listserve and through periodic update meetings. Our References page is updated regularly as new research is released.
- Where can I go to find out more about the brain?
- Be sure to explore our information sections thoroughly. Brain Basics provides basic information about the brain and how it develops. Child Development explains how children develop in the first few years of life. Our sections on Physical Well-Being, Attachment, Play, Consistency, and Stress explain how adults can help support brain development. - Is the BBB brochure available in languages other than English?
- A Spanish translation of the brochure is available online or in print. The brochure has not been translated into other languages.
Better Brains for Babies Trainers
- How do I find a Better Brains for Babies trainer who will teach my group about brain development?
- Go to Invite a Trainer. We have more than 100 trainers from many different organizations who have successfully completed the two-day train-the-trainer workshop, and are ready to teach your group or organization about early brain development. You can search for a trainer by name, organization, city, county, or region.
- What if I can’t find a trainer in my city or county?
- Try broadening your search. Many trainers are willing to travel to different areas of the state. Trainers from many organizations cover several counties and may work in your area. If you used a city, search for the county name instead. If you searched for a county, try a region search to find trainers in your area of the state. Click here to see a map of the regions.
- If you don’t find a trainer after searching by region, click on “View All” to see all trainers’ records. The “Where” field will show you where each trainer is willing to travel. If you still can't find a trainer, feel free to Contact Us.
- How are your regions defined?
- Our trainers specify the region or regions where they are willing to train using the child care resource and referral agency map. Click here to see the regions.
- How much will trainers charge for a workshop?
- BBB trainers are committed to sharing brain development information and charge fair and reasonable rates to cover their time and travel. Better Brains for Babies does not set specific trainer fees. Check with individual trainers for their rates.
- How can I become a Better Brains for Babies trainer?
- Our trainers are professionals with a bachelor’s degree or higher, experience providing training and education, and opportunities to share the Better Brains for Babies message with groups in Georgia. All trainers are required to complete a two-day Better Brains for Babies train-the-trainer workshop, and commit to provide at least one training a year. Applications from potential trainers are accepted beginning about 6 weeks in advance of each train-the-trainer workshop. Go to Become a Trainer for more information.
- Is Better Brains for Babies training available in Spanish?
- Currently the train-the-trainer workshop is only taught in English, but some trainers who are bilingual may be willing to provide the training in Spanish for your group. If you are searching for a bilingual trainer, go to Invite a Trainer and select “Spanish” from the drop-down “Search by” menu.
- We are interested in having more bilingual trainers participate, in order to build a core group who can offer BBB training in Spanish. If you know of a qualified bilingual trainer, please encourage him or her to apply to be a BBB trainer on the Become a Trainer page.
The Better Brains for Babies Initiative
- How did Better Brains for Babies get started?
- In 1998, fourteen public and private Georgia organizations with mutual interests in supporting the state's efforts to improve child outcomes formed a team to guide the Better Brains for Babies initiative. Since 1998, three versions of the BBB trainer’s guide have been released, and thousands of Georgians have participated in a training workshop led by a BBB trainer. For more information on the initiative, go to our History page.
- Who leads the Better Brains for Babies initiative?
- The BBB initiative is co-led by Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning and The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension, with funding from the Georgia Children’s Trust Fund Commission. The leadership team includes representatives of public and private organizations in Georgia with an interest in early brain development. Our Partners page describes our partners and provides links to their individual web sites.
