Apparel/Fabric

Ketchup/Tomato:

  1. Apply a commercial pre-wash spot and stain remover to stain according to manufacturer's directions. Launder with a heavy-duty liquid detergent.
  2. Blot stain with a commercial cleaner.* Launder.

Barbecue, Spaghetti Sauces

Sponge with a commercial cleaner.* Cover with a pad of absorbent material dampened with the cleaner. Keep moistened and let stand as long as stain is being removed. Change pad as it picks up stain. Flush with the cleaner. Allow to dry. Sponge with water. Apply a few drops of liquid hand dishwashing detergent and a few drops of ammonia. Cover and let stand and change pad as before except use hand dishwashing detergent and ammonia to dampen. Flush with water being sure to remove all ammonia. Soak in a solution of 1 quart warm water and 1 tablespoon sodium perborate bleach for 30 minutes. Rinse with water. Launder with heavy-duty detergent and bleach safe for fabric.

*Look for products containing petroleum distillates or hydrocarbon such as trichloroethane, xylene, methylene chloride, methane, benzene and/or naphtha.

These chemicals may be found in such spot removers and cleaners as Guardsman's Afta, Dap Cleaner and Thinner, Goof Off, M-1 Remover, Goo Gone, K2r. These products can be found at hardware stores, discount department stores, and grocery stores.

Carpet

Blended Fibers, Fur, Hemp, Jute, Natural Fibers, Synthetic Fibers, Wool

The tomato in this product can stain permanently. Wipe up spills immediately.

  1. Sponge the stain with cool water. Spray the stain with a combination solvent such as Spray 'n Wash or Shout. Agitate lightly with a toothbrush or your fingers. Cover the stain with a white folded absorbent pad and blot. Rotate pad as it picks up stain. Sponge the stain with cool water to rinse. Blot again with a white folded absorbent pad. Rotate it as it picks up stain.
  2. If stain remains, sponge the area with a solution of 1 part vinegar to 1 part water. Blot with a clean white absorbent pad. Rinse with clear water. Blot again with a white folded absorbent pad, rotating it so a clean surface is always placed against the stain. If no stain remains, place a 1/2 inch layer of white absorbent pads over the area. Weight them down with books or a heavy object. Allow to remain for several house then remove the books or heavy object and absorbent pads and fluff the carpet pile with your hand.
  3. If stain persists, make a potion of:
  • 2 tablespoons oxal acid
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 8 tablespoons glycerin
  • Butyl (not rubbing) alcohol 

Mix the oxalic acid and white vinegar. Add the glycerin and stir. Continue stirring while adding enoup" butyl alcohol to make the mixture clear. Apply this potion to the stain and leave it in place FOR A FEW MINUTES ONLY. Blot up the potion. Flush the area with clear water and blot again. Place 1/2 inch Iayer of an absorbent pad over the area and follow procedure described in Method #2.

  • Alcohol will damage acetate, triacetate, modacrylics and acrylic fibers. Dilute with 2 parts water on acetate.

Vinegar should be diluted with 2 parts water to 1 part vinegar if used on cotton or linen.

Hard Surface Floors

Brick, Concrete, Stone/masonry (Except Marble), Tile

  1. Remove excess spill as quickly as possible. Wipe with a cloth dipped in solution of Washing (sal) Soda or detergent in warm water. Never use soap. Scrub the surface using a soft-bristled brush. Rinse thoroughly with clear water and allow to dry.
  2. If any stain remains, mix a poultice of water, mild bleach and a powdered detergent. Apply to stained area. Cover with a damp cloth to retard evaporation. When stain is gone, rinse well and wipe
  3. If stain persists, wipe area with a cloth dampened in a solution of 1 tablespoon oxalic acid to 1 pint water. Rinse well and wipe dry. Re-polish or re-seal the surface if needed.

Marble

  1. Sponge up all excess liquid. Wipe the surface with a cloth dipped in warm, sudsy water. Rinse well and wipe dry.
  2. If any stain or discoloration remains, mix a poultice of water, powdered detergent, and hydrogen peroxide bleach. Apply a thick paste to the stain and cover with a damp cloth to retard evaporation. Leave in place until the stain has been removed. Rinse thoroughly with water and dry.

Wood

Mix dishwashing detergent in hot water and swish to make a great volume of suds. Dip a cloth in only the foam and apply to the stained area. Rinse with a clean cloth dampened with clear water. Wipe dry immediately. Polish or wax as usual to return the luster to the surface.

NOTE: Work carefully, but quickly. Do not allow moisture to remain very long on the wood.

Upholstered Furniture

Blended Fibers, Fiberglass, Natural Fibers, Synthetic Fiber

  1. Sponge the stain with cool water. Spray the stain with a combination solvent such as Spray 'n \ .1 or Shout. Agitate lightly with a toothbrush or your fingers.   • Overwetting with water may cause the finish on the upholstery fabric to migrate and thus leave a circle in the treated area.

Walls And Ceilings

Paper (Regular Untreated, Plastic Coated, Vinyl - Fabric Backed, Paper Backed, Solid)

  1. Immediately sponge or gently scrape away excess soil as tomato-based products will often permanently stain wallpaper. Use a damp sponge or cloth. Overlap strokes to prevent streaks. Gently pat dry.
  2. If stain persists, try a commercial wallpaper cleaner.

Wood, Paneling

  1. Food spills containing tomato products should be wiped immediately with cloth dipped in warm sudsy water and wrung almost dry. Rinse, using a clean cloth dipped in clear water and wrung almost dry. Wipe dry and polish or wax the surface to original luster.
  2. If the wood paneling has been treated with a polyurethane sealer, wiping the surface with a damp cloth should be sufficient to remove the spill.

Other/interior

Alabaster

  1. Remove excess spill as quickly as possible. Wipe with a cloth dipped in solution of detergent in warm water.
