Health Trends and Statistics in the Restaurant Industry
Forty eight percent of the family food dollar is spent on eating out. Georgia is one of the top states for projected growth in the restaurant industry. Restaurants have noted an increase in consumers looking for healthier choices and this is attributed to the aging baby boomers. Four out of ten table service restaurants feature or promote certain menu items because of specific or unique nutritional benefits. Increase in customer demand for healthier options due to medical conditions such as elevated cholesterol and heart disease. Restaurants are reporting that over 70 percent of consumers are more interested in customizing their food choices today than they were two years ago. Increase in meatless and vegetarian dishes offered in restaurants over the past 2 years. Ninety-five percent of restaurants provide take-away containers for consumers to turn tonights dinner into tomorrows lunch. Increase in the
consumption of ethnic cuisine, such as Asian and Mediterranean, which
emphasizes healthy ingredients such as vegetables, grains and fish.
