¡Salud! Addressing
Latino Health Challenges
Conference
Dates: July 29-31, 2002
Call
for Presenters
Are
you working to improve the health of Latinos? If so, we want to hear from
you!
The Department of
Foods and Nutrition, College of Family and Consumer Sciences, University
of Georgia would like to know how you are working with the Latino population.
We are especially interested in new, innovative and successful approaches
to dealing with Latino health challenges. If selected, you could present
your program at the ¡Salud! Addressing Latino Health Challenges Conference
in Athens, GA (July 29-31, 2002). The theme of the meeting is:
Health Solutions for the Latino Point of View. All we need from
you is an outline, and we have some guidelines for you to follow listed
below.
General
Your outline would
need to be received by Thursday, February 28, 2002 for consideration
by the Program Committee.
We will let you know
when we receive your outline and notify you if your proposal has been
accepted or not via mail or email on or about April 1, 2002.
Conditions for
Submission
- Please use Microsoft
Word 97 format (doc).
- Use Times New
Roman font in 12 point.
- Send all submissions
to the attention of Leslie Rodriguez, Project Director via either:

- Please let
us know if you would prefer:
- an oral presentation
- a poster presentation

- If accepted, you
will need to register for the conference (Information about scholarships
will be available at a later date.)
Format of Paper
Submissions
- The outline of
your program must be limited to 250 words or fewer.
- Select the subject
listed below that your program most closely addresses:
- Latino home cures,
popular beliefs, and/or food preferences
- Latino family
values
- Communicating
with low-literate Latinos (immigrants)
- Uses of the Spanish
media
- Health promotion
and prevention programs in the Latino community
- Latino health
challenges and/or barriers to healthcare and solutions
- Latino workforce
health challenges and solutions
- Research with
Latinos
- Other__________________________________
The outline itself
should consist of the following parts:
- Program title
- Briefly describe
the problem and solution(s) you will be presenting (limit: 100 words)
- State what the
people who hear/see your presentation should learn from you and/or your
program
- Summary (limit:
100 words): Briefly describe your program, why it has worked, how many
people you are reaching, etc. All summaries will be translated into
an international version of Spanish. If you could supply us with a translated
version of your summary, it would be very helpful.
- Include information
about the person who will be main contact and/or presenting your program:
name, address, phone, fax, email address, certification/credentials,
title, organization, and how they are involved with the Latino population.
Poster
Presentations
Poster papers will
be a maximum of 4x8 ft. Presenter must remain at the poster throughout
the session. A poster will give you a chance to display your program.
Make sure you include an introduction to the Latino health issue you are
working to address, how your program began, how many Latinos it is reaching,
why it has been successful, etc.
Oral Presentations
- The accepted
oral papers will be for 15-minute presentations with 5 minutes of questions
to follow (strict time limitation).
