CANNED FRUITS & VEGETABLES
Canned tomatoes

Canned fruits and vegetables objectives:

  1. Identify and select low-sodium canned vegetables

  2. Identify and select fruit packed in light syrup or fruit juice

  3. Describe the differences between fresh and canned produce

Objective 1: Identify and select low-sodium canned vegetables

•Many canned vegetables are packed in a lot of salt

•Look for “low-sodium” or “no added salt” on the label

Objective 2: Identify and select fruit packed in light syrup or fruit juice

•Many canned fruits are packed in a great deal of sugar, which increases the calories, but not the nutritional content

•Look for fruit packed in “light syrup” or “fruit juice”

Objective 3: Describe the differences between fresh and canned produce

•Inform participants that the main differences are outlined on “Choosing Fruits and Vegetables”

•The one thing that canned fruits and vegetables lack is usually fiber because much of the fiber in produce is found in the peel, which is removed for canning

•Always keep plenty of canned fruits and vegetables in your pantry, so that they are available even after your fresh produce has been eaten

•Canned varieties can be used very easily in recipes
