Fats/oil/salad dressing aisle objectives:

1.      Identify and select heart healthy oil choices

2.      Understand how to use fat replacers in recipes

Objective 1: Identify and select heart healthy oil choices

•Best heart healthy oil choices

• Olive, canola, safflower, and sunflower oils because have more unsaturated fat, which is a heart smart fat.  However, they must still be used in moderation!  Unsaturated fat may help lower blood cholesterol

•Salad dressings

•Many low-fat and fat-free variations that are just as good as full-fat product

•Conduct taste test of fat-free vs. full fat salad dressing with vegetable sticks or crackers

•Encourage participants to use low-fat or fat-free mayonnaise

Objective 2: Understand how to use fat replacers in recipes

•Use non-stick spray instead of butter on pans

•Use applesauce in recipes to replace fat

•Substitute chicken broth for water in mashed potatoes and don’t use butter
