Understanding the Consumer

We present students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make wise decisions as consumers. Through courses in consumer economics, students learn about:

  • The roles of consumers
  • The roles of producers
  • The government in our economic system
  • The decision-making process

In addition, Consumer Economics addresses financial, housing, and consumer questions that directly affect family economic well-being. Through this program students study available options and how to get the most for their money in specific areas of spending, such as food, transportation, housing and insurance.

You'll Learn

  • The economic theory of a household’s consumption
  • The contributing factors and influences of an individual consumer’s purchasing habits
  • Personal finance and how effective personal budgeting can help improve a household’s economic standing

You will discover the rights and privileges provided consumers by federal and state law, in addition to predatory practices consumers may encounter in the markets and as well as how to identify and explain these practices to other individuals.

As a student of Consumer Economics, you will also have the opportunity to participate in Legislative Aide Internships where you will work for a Georgia senator/representative during the Georgia General Assembly session at the Capitol in Atlanta.

What do students think?

Students described this major as “practical, personal, and interactive.”

“The focus is on the consumer.”

“It’s everyday life knowledge.”

“The professors are really sweet and caring. You really get to know them. They will email and check up on you.”

“3150 was a tough class with Dr. Nielsen, but it was a pleasant surprise that if I just did the work I could excel. I can use what I learned in that class for sure.”

“I liked all the teachers in the department. They are genuinely interested in students.”

“It was just a lot friendlier over here. The first day talking to Diane Costyn, I knew this place would be more personal. It was pretty dry over there.”

“I love having all my classes in Dawson.”

“The major gives you a good working knowledge, but it’s also practical.”

Some students found they enjoyed the application of economics to consumer decisions more than the business perspective.

FHCE majors appreciate the small class size, and that professors know students by name, even one or two semesters later.

FHCE majors overwhelmingly agreed that they felt welcome and included in the Department.
