My Green Commitment

I pledge to make the following changes. Select at least 5 things you will do.

  1. Replace at least 1 incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) with the ENERGY STAR® label. If one light bulb was replaced in every home in the U.S., we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year and save over $600 million in energy costs. (http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=cfls.pr_cfls)
  2. Install a programmable thermostat to keep the house comfortably warm in the winter and cool in the summer. (http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=thermostats.pr_thermostats)
  3. Lower the thermostat on the hot water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit (http://www.energysavers.gov/your_home/water_heating/index.cfm/mytopic=13090)
  4. Turn off computer and monitor when not in use (http://www.energysavers.gov/your_home/appliances/index.cfm/mytopic=10070)
  5. Save water and energy by washing only full loads of clothes.  Buying an ENERGY STAR washing machine will save you an average of $50 a year on utility bills. (http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=clotheswash.clothes_washers_save_money)
  6. Shorten shower time to 5 minutes or replace your showerhead with one bearing a WaterSense label. It will use no more than 2 gallons of water per minute, or 10 gallons for a 5 minute shower. (http://www.epa.gov/WaterSense/pp/showerheads.htm)
  7. Join the Environmental Protection Agency’s Resource Conservation Challenge and recycle 35 percent of the solid waste produced by myself and my family.  (http://www.epa.gov/epawaste/rcc/index.htm)
  8. Plant a garden and start composting food scraps and yard trimmings. (http://pubs.caes.uga.edu/caespubs/pubs/PDF/B577.pdf)
  9. Save money and reduce volatile organic compounds in your home by choosing green cleaning products. (http://www.fcs.uga.edu/ext/housing/home_maint.php)
  10. Control pests without pesticides (http://www.fcs.uga.edu/ext/pubs/hace/HACE-E-56.pdf or http://ipm.ent.uga.edu/)
