The Housing major gives students expertise in various aspects of housing including needs assessment; financing; federal, state, and local housing programs; housing policy; housing theory; household technology; property management; and real estate. The major helps students gain a comprehensive understanding of housing as a product, an environment, a service, and a process for sheltering a diverse and changing population adequately, accessibly, and affordably. Students may choose an emphasis in Residential Property Management, which prepares students to work with diverse groups as they manage real estate. Coursework delves into such topics as mortgages, financing, governmental policies dealing with housing, and social issues related to the field, and also includes sales (leasing), accounting, development, human resources, technology services, training, and management.

Minor in Housing
The minor in HOUSING provides a knowledge base for persons interested in a consumer’s perspective of the housing marketplace. Housing issues and policies affecting and affected by consumers are emphasized. The minor may include coursework on Housing Counseling and Residential Property Management.
To declare the minor: Go to FACS - Student Services (112 Dawson Hall) and complete a Declaration of Minor form. The staff there will check and sign your form. Then, take the completed form to your own school/college. Some courses may not be available to you unless you declare the minor.
Review the required courses (listed below). Substitutions cannot be made within the minor. To learn about prerequisites and scheduling, click here to review pages 17-18 of HACE is the Place: Undergraduate Handbook.
Once you declare the minor, it will appear on your DARS. If the requirements listed there are different from the ones listed here, most likely they are the requirements that were in place when you declared the major. Follow the requirements on your DARS.

*If one or more of the courses in the list above fulfills the student's major requirements, choose courses from the list below that do no fulfill major requirements for the student. A course cannot be used to satisfy requirements for both the major and a minor.

Requirements for minors include:

MUST BE IN GOOD STANDING
- Must earn at least a "C" grade (2.0) in each minor course.
- A minor must contain at least 9 hours of upper division course work.
- Courses taken to satisfy core Areas A through E (I through V) CANNOT be counted as course work in the minor.
- Courses taken in core Area F (Area VI) may be counted as course work in the minor.
- Courses taken for a minor CANNOT count in major required areas.
- All prerequisites must be met for the courses.
In the semester in which you complete the requirements for the minor, visit the Office of Student Services (112 Dawson Hall) in Family and Consumer Sciences to verify that you have completed the requirements for the minor.
