Requirements to Apply to the Double Dawgs Child Life Pathway
60 credit hours of coursework upon application to pathway (including courses in progress)
Overall GPA of 3.3 or better
GPA in HDFS courses of 3.5 or better
Completed, or currently enrolled in, HDFS 4810: Hospitalized Child and the Family
Applicants to the Double Dawgs Child Life pathway applicants will be required to submit the following documents. (Use this Application Checklist to keep track and be sure you are submitting all required documentation.)
Completed Common Child Life Internship Application. This application will include space for you to document experience with infants, children, youth, and/or families. Minimum recommended experience requirements to be a competitive applicant include
100 documented hours of experience with well infants, children, youth, and/or families*
100 hours of experience with infants, children, youth, and/or families in stressful situations*
Statement of Professional Goals (including why you want to be admitted to the Double Dawgs Child Life program, your goals for Master’s-level graduate study, and how those goals relate to your professional employment plans following graduation. Please limit to no more than 3 typed double-spaced pages.)
Three letters of recommendation, including at least one from a college instructor. Across the three letters, choose people who can address your academic ability to complete Master’s level work, your work habits, and your ability to work with children and families in a clinical setting. Please have letter writers seal their letter in an envelope, sign the back flap, and send them to you to include, unopened, in your application packet.
Transcripts of all college coursework at institutions other than UGA (unofficial transcripts are acceptable for the pathway application).
*Note: Students accepted into the pathway will complete a 100 hour practicum as part of their spring coursework to gain additional experience with infants, children, or youth as part of their spring coursework. Specific assignments for this practicum will be decided in consultation with the Child Life Director and Child Life Coordinator.
How to Submit Your Application
For Fall 2017 only, students will submit paper copies of all application materials. Please collect all materials into a single packet and deliver them to Barbara Derricotte in Family Science Center 2, 405 Sanford Drive. (Beginning in Fall 2018, application materials will be submitted online.) The application deadline for Fall 2017 is Monday, October 9 at noon.
Graduate Program Application
Students accepted to the pathway will be required to submit a graduate program application during year 4. The application will include a Graduate School application, updated transcripts, and a professional resume. Instructions about this graduate program application will be sent to those in the pathway early in the fall of year 4.
