Finding Help
Where to Find Help
One of the many services we offer is help with any miscellaneous problems one might have while working in the computer labs. If you find that you are having difficulty with a program or printing, you have some options for finding help.
The main options you have are in the form of the Lab Assistants and the Lab Manager. If you are unable to locate them, you may ask the help of any Computer Services Staff member. Always try to find the manager or an assistant before asking for help of anyone else.
The Computer Services Lab Manager
The responsibilities of the Lab Manager include offering help to any students, faculty, or staff using the equipment in the Computer labs. His/Her desk is located in the Center office (Dawson 200) of the Lab suite.
*If there is not a lab assistant present, or if the lab assistant is unable to help you, please feel free to ask the Lab Manager for help.
Locating a Lab Assistant
Through out the school year, Computer services employs students on either a student worker or work study basis. Each of these students sets up a station within one of our three labs. To differentiate a lab assistant from another student user of the lab, look for the sign stating "Lab Tech" near the computer they are working on.
Each lab assistant is trained to help you with your computer needs. If you have a question that the assistant does not immediately know the answer to, s/he is qualified to work with you until you both come to an answer for the problem. If they cannot find the answer, they can direct you to a manual or they will ask the Lab Manager for help.
Computer Support Outside of the Lab Environment
If you need computer assistance and you are not in the student lab environment, please contact the Helpdesk via E-mail.
Computer Services uses email to track all requests for help and support from the college. Our numbers are too few for you to rely on a phone request for help. The easiest, most time efficient way of making sure your request is answered is to email the helpdesk.
The only time we accept a request via phone or walk-in is when your email is not working.
The helpdesk e-mail system is our way of making sure your requests are taken care of and that no one goes without support and ensures that all requests will be handled by someone in a timely manner.

Policies
Food and Drink
For the protection of the lab equipment, food and drinks are not permitted in any of the Computer Services Student Computer Labs. Please place any food or drinks in the designated areas. Violators of this policy will be asked to leave!
Installing Software on Computers
Under no circumstances is any software allowed to be installed onto the systems in the Computer Lab! If you are found in violation of this policy, you will lose access to the Computer Lab for the rest of the semester!
Children in the Student Labs
Computer Services strongly cautions parents against bringing young children to the student labs.
- The large amounts of cords, cables, outlets, and other electrical paraphenalia makes child safety a major concern.
- Out of consideration for other lab users, we also advise against bringing infants into the labs
Using Lab Applications
In order to use any machine in the Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Computer Labs, you must be a member of FCS. This means you must be a faculty, staff, or student of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Your membership is verified through the log in process.
Printing
Payment
In the Fall of 1999 UCNS announced that students would have to pay a per page fee for its printing services. FCS Computer Services understands the inconvenience of this policy for our students, faculty, and staff. Therefore, we have instituted a separate printing policy for our student Computer Labs. This policy involves a quota system.
The Print Quota System
Each student of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences is assigned a quota of 400 pages per semester. The quota is tracked through the student accounts. Once the student reaches their 400 page limit, he/she will be unable to print. A message box on the screen willl inform him/her that her quota has been met and that he/she must see the lab manager. In order to reset the student's quota he/she must write a check in the amount of $10 payable to Computer Services.
A Usage scenario for the Print Quota System
A student enters the FCS Computer lab. The student is required to log on the computer s/he wishes to use. Once s/he has logged on, the quota begins tracking how many pages are being printed from the students account. The student creates a five page document and then prints it. The paper will either be printed double sided or single sided depending upon the current printer settings (students are not allowed to change any settings on a lab computer). The quota system will deduct exactly 5 pages from the student's 400 page quota. The student then closes all applications and leaves the lab with out logging out of the machine.
A second student enters the lab and sits down at the same computer. This student does not log out the last user, but instead begins a document of his/her own. This document contains 10 pages. When the student is done s/he prints the ten pages. The original quota has now subtracted another 10 pages without differentiating between two different users.
The original student continues to print from his/her account without remembering to log out of the computer when s/he is done. One day rather early in the semester, the student enters the lab and begins to write a paper. S/he completes the 10 page paper and is ready to print. Instead of a print dialog box the student will see a message box. The box will tell him/her that s/he has reached his/her limit and must see the lab manager. The student will then have to write a check (no cash, credit/debit/check cards) in the amount of $10 to reset the quota for the remainder of the semester.
Policies Regarding the Quota System
- Quota's are not transferable to another person: It is against the University's Computing Policy for any student to allow another student access to his/her personal account. If a student knowingly allows another to use his/her account, both students are then in violation of University Policy.
- Quotas cannot be transferred to a different semester: A quota that has been reset or has not reached its limit does not "roll over" to the following semester.
- Computer Services is not responsible if a quota is reached by someone other than the owner of the account: If a student leaves his/her computer logged in, there is no way Computer Services can track any other user on the machine. If your quota is reached, you must pay to have it reset. The student is the only one who can prevent illegal use of his/her account and quota.
- Any students caught illegally using someone else's account must be reported to Computer Services immediately: The only way to aid Computer Services in correcting illegal usage of student accounts is to report it when you see it happening
