Research: Diet and cancer prevention Teaching: Diet and disease prevention and treatment Interests: Oxidative stress may contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. One area of Dr. Fischer's research has focused on the effect of nutrients such as iron and vitamin E on antioxidant status, oxidative stress, and biomarkers associated with colon and liver cancer development. Recent studies have also included flavonoids, antioxidant compounds found in fruits and vegetables. Another research interest is the examination of food and nutrient intakes of elderly individuals. Research: My research examines the role played by circulating factors in the feedback regulation of energy balance, with particular emphasis on the function of the adipose-derived hormone leptin. Research: Osteoporosis Prevention in Children and Adults; Body Composition Assessment; Pediatric Overweight Teaching: Nutrition Throughout the Life Cycle and Medical Nutrition Therapy. Interests: Dr. Lewis's primary area of research examines the bone responses to dietary interventions. His Osteoporosis Prevention Using Soy Isoflavones (OPUS) project is examining the efficacy and safety of soy isoflavones in postmenopausal women. He is conducting a zinc intervention trial in early pubertal children to examine the effects of zinc on bone turnover and is examining the links between overweight, vitamin D status and bone quality in children.
