Childhood Physical Activity and Nutrition Grant

Goal

CPAN seeks to address childhood overweight and physical inactivity through school- and community-based intervention programs through grants funded by Healthcare Georgia Foundation.  This program will be addressing a population of children and youth outside of the metropolitan Atlanta area.

To address childhood overweight and inactivity by implementing programs on a local level that will promote an increase in age-appropriate physical activity programs and improvements in nutrition among school aged children and youths.

Four essential outcomes to be measured:

  1. Increased participation in activities to promote physical activity.
  2. Increased participation in activities to improve nutrition.
  3. Self-reported increases in physical activity among participants.
  4. Self-reported improvements in nutrition.

The University of Georgia’s Food and Nutrition Department’s Nutrition Intervention Lab will be providing evaluation and technical assistance for the intervention grantees.  The Nutrition Intervention Lab was organized in 1999 and is led by Rebecca M. Mullis, PhD.RD.  Additional staff on this project are Marsha Davis, PhD, Evaluation Director; and Oliva Seaver, MS, Graduate Assistant.

Grantee Information

HealthMPowers

HealthMPowers is implementing programs in four elementary and three middle schools in Walton County and Greene County to improve nutrition and physical fitness programs.  This program includes:
*fitness education and assessments to help students  understand, improve or maintain their physical well-being
*instruction on cognitive concepts about physical fitness that support a lifelong healthy lifestyle
*instruction in healthy eating habits and good nutrition
*opportunities for professional development for physical education teachers to stay current of the latest research, issues and trends in the field of physical education.

School Health Councils are being used to address staff development and systems change.  The School Health Councils are to be comprised of teachers, parents, physical education instructors, nurses, dietitians and other school personnel to assess individual school health policies and programs to develop action plans for improvement.

Lowndes County Board of Health (LCBH)

LCBH is implementing a health education program to increase physical activity and nutrition in Valdosta Middle School and Lowndes County Middle School.  A Wellness Council is being established at the two schools and includes teachers, parents, students, nutritionists, coaches, dietitians and other school officials.  The council is examining policies related to increasing student physical activity and improving school nutrition.  Such issues as vending machines, physical education, nutrition and physical education curriculum, and nutritional guidelines for school events are being addressed by the council.

Students’ Body Mass Index (BMI), weight and blood pressure are being assessed.  Also students’ current health behaviors including physical activity levels and consumption of nutritious foods are being assessed using surveys.  Before- and after-school programs are being provided three times a week to encourage students to increase their physical activity.

Northwest Georgia Healthcare Partnership (NGHP)

NGHP is implementing school-based health education, physical activity and nutrition programs in Murray County, Whitfield County and Dalton public schools.  The core program includes providing professional development training, implementing school policies to support healthy behaviors, and using age-appropriate best practice curriculum materials, tools and resources to be used in each participating school.  A school wellness coordinator collaborates with each school district’s school health council, food service managers,  school curriculum directors and other school personnel to identify evidence-based curriculum materials and finalize an appropriate program structure that will fit the needs of each individual school.  An after-school walking club is being  implemented as well as after-school nutrition education.

Southwest Georgia Community Health Institute (SGCHI)

SGCHI is implementing school-based physical activity and nutrition programs for middle school students in Albany, Georgia.   The “Ready Set Go” program is being utilized and is designed to reduce risk for becoming overweight by increasing physical activity among children and increasing nutrition education for students, parents and teachers/faculty.  A physical fitness assessment is being completed and includes BMI, monitoring steps taken with a pedometer and completion of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire.

BlazeSports America

The USDAF is developing and implementing a community and school-based physical activity and nutrition program for disabled children (K-8) in two Georgia communities.  Plans include development and implementation of age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate physical activity /nutrition curricula for K-8 grade levels.  Individual fitness assessments is being conducted by a therapeutic recreation specialist.  Weekly after-school fitness clubs are being implemented at each participating school.

YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta

The YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta is expanding implementation of a school-based physical activity and nutrition program for elementary students in Coweta, Fayette, and Henry counties.  This project  expands the YMCA’s Youth Fit For Life program to communities outside the metropolitan Atlanta area.  The Youth Fit For Life program is a comprehensive, research-based program which includes physical fitness, nutrition, cognitive, behavioral and social aspects to improve the physical fitness of youth 5-12 years of age.  Curriculum of Fit For Life consists of cardiovascular activities, strength building exercises, behavior skills training and nutrition/health education.
