Study Abroad Intergenerational Studies in Cambodia

Dr. Denise Lewis
112 A Dawson Hall
706-542-0254

Description of program: The Intergenerational Studies in Cambodia study tour is based on service-learning and is designed to provide students with hands-on experience working with multiple generations of impoverished families in Cambodia. Students will develop a global perspective on intergenerational relations and families, an awareness of the influence of historical, biological, physiological, psychological, cultural, and social factors on families, and they will develop an understanding of and be able to apply theories and academic concepts to "real-life" situations of impoverished families in Cambodia.

While studying in Cambodia, students will: work with impoverished children in elementary schools, orphanages, and nutrition centers and with adult family members in skills learning centers in Cambodia. They also will develop, in collaboration with teachers in Cambodia and with Dr. Lewis, educational activities for the children in the elementary schools and in the orphanages. In addition, some students will engage in the creation of an outreach program for impoverished mothers and grandmothers in the area served by the elementary schools.
