Study Abroad
Study Tour in Foods and Nutrition: Food in Culture & Health - Mexico
Description of program:
The purpose of this in service-learning is to provide Latino
children in the Athens area with culturally nutritional counseling and
to provide the students with hands on experience working with
dieticians, physicians, and early childhood teachers in Mexico. In order
to achieve this goal, UGA students will visit Mexico to study nutrition
and the Latino culture.
Students will begin with orientation on The University of Georgia
campus, and will spend approximately 4 weeks in Xalapa, Mexico and
surrounding areas studying Spanish and learning about Mexican culture,
foods culture, health and educational issues. Students will attend
classes, hands-on rotation at different hospitals and preK and
kindergarten schools, seminars and field trips. Students will live with
a local family, an experience which is often the most rewarding part of
the courses.
A typical day in Xalapa will include hospital rotations, visit to
schools, Spanish/Mexican Cultural classes in the Escuela para
Estudiantes Extranjeros (School for Foreign Students) at the
University of Veracruz, la comida (afternoon meal) with their host
families, and evening seminars. In addition, students may explore the
rich cultural heritage of the area with host families. Students will
also travel on weekend field trips to the archaeological sites.
While studying in Xalapa, students will:
- Students will visit Xalapa and learn about the Mexican culture and diet by living with a Mexican host family. (Better preparing them to compete in a global society).
- Students will develop educational materials for young children that reflect cultural sensitivity in the topic of nutrition education. (Participants will gain practical experience through their
service-learning project and help empower the Latino community in Georgia).
- Students will have the opportunity to learn through service-learning by implementing an educational program for young Latino children in the Athens community.
