1. Announcement: 2nd Annual Dawson Hall Pageant

Do you think you have what it takes to be the next Mx. Dawson Hall?  The Student Association of Family and Consumer Sciences is hosting the 2nd Annual Dawson Hall Pageant themed: Rooted in FACS on February 23, 2017 at 6pm.  Interest packets are available in the Student Success and Advising Center (SSAC), Dawson 112.  The last day to submit your interest packet is January 27, 2017 at 5pm in the SSAC.

2. Scholarship: The Don Bower Extension Experience Fund

Don Bower (Ph.D. 1989) served the University of Georgia for thirty-three years. The majority of his work was within Public Service and Georgia Cooperative Extension. He retired in 2008 as Professor and Department Head of the Department of Child and Family Development. Upon his retirement, his colleagues and friends created and funded this named endowment in his honor.

The College invites currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students in good academic standing in any FACS program to apply for the Don Bower Extension Experience. Applications submitted in January 2017 and selected for funding will provide students with Extension experience opportunities during the Maymester, summer, or fall semesters 2017. Available funding: $1,000.00

Applications be accepted before midnight Friday, January 20, 2017. A stipend will be awarded for a student experience or internship (either undergraduate or graduate) to have an exposure to the field of Family and Consumer Sciences Cooperative Extension work.

3. Scholarship: Study Away Scholarship Application Deadline

As a major in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences you have access to exclusive FACS scholarships.  Visit the FACS Scholarships page for more information and to apply to study away and undergraduate scholarships.

Study Away

The application for study away scholarships is now available.  Study Away (international and domestic) scholarships help cover the cost of your trip.

The deadline is January 27, 2017, by 5:00 p.m.

Requirements:

  1. You must be an enrolled undergraduate or graduate student majoring in a FACS degree program and a participant of a FACS-approved study away program, which includes both international and domestic destinations.  
  2. Any scholarship criteria that mentions enrollment in a specific major as a condition for eligibility requires that you be admitted to the major.
  3. To be awarded, you must meet any additional criteria that are specific to the scholarship eligibility requirements as stipulated in the fund agreement. 
  4. You will need to ask one faculty member for a reference. Follow the directions for submitting your online application, which includes the reference form, to your faculty reference.

4.  Volunteer Opportunity: Project F.R.E.E Child Care

Are you looking for an opportunity to work with children? If you want to gain valuable hands-on experience without having to commit an entire semester? This short-term option is for  you!

Additional Details:

  • Child care support is provided to reduce barriers to parents participating in our project’s couple and parenting weekly program series
  • Each series consists of 4 weekly classes, and each class is schedule in the evening with dinner provided
  • We ask volunteers commit once per week for a full 4-week series to provide quality child care

5. Upcoming Event: UGA Entrepreneurship Competition

The Entrepreneurship Program invites you to take part in UGA's Next Top Entrepreneur hosted each year during Athens' StartUp Week.
UGA's Next Top Entrepreneur is open to student startup teams from all over the country. During this live event, teams pitch their existing business or idea in front of an audience and a panel of judges who have experience in the startup and business world. The winning team is awarded $10,000!
 

WHO IS ELIGIBLE: Students from any college or university with a solid business idea, concept, and/or existing business who are looking to take it to the next level.
 

STARTUP TEAM REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least two team members must be an active undergraduate/masters student (no doctoral students).
  • The startup must have less than $1 million in annual sales.
  • Only 4 members of the team may participate in the competition (no exceptions).
  • Have a registered LLC within the United States
  • At least two student team members must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • There is no limit on the type of business!

HOW TO APPLY
The Application portal will be open from October 1, 2016 to February 1, 2017
 


6. Upcoming Event: FACS Day at the Capitol Registration Open Now!

Early registration for FACS students, faculty, and staff is now open for FACS Day at the Capitol.

What do you need to know?

  1. It’s a great day to learn about the legislative process and its impact on our everyday lives.
  2. See our FACS Legislative Aide Interns in action.
  3. Transportation and lunch are provided.
  4. Registration closes on Wednesday, February 8.
  5. The Student Success and Advising Center will provide an excused absence letter to students for missed classes.
