All UGA undergraduate students can now compete for $1,000 stipends to participate in a research assistantship program as part of a new initiative designed to encourage involvement in faculty-mentored research.

Provost Pamela Whitten, in conjunction with the Center for Undergraduate Research (CURO), announced the Undergraduate Research Assistantship Program earlier this year.

Assistantships are one-semester, non-renewable awards for either Fall 2014 or Spring 2015. If beneficial for their programs of study, students may conduct research with faculty members outside their department, college or school, including those units that do not have any or many undergraduate programs.

Students from other colleges at UGA are also welcome to engage in research with FACS faculty mentors and scholars.

FACS students must take the following steps by Aug. 20 in order to participate in this program:

Step 1: Identify a faculty mentor (see link here) and on the CURO site here.

Step 2: Go to this website.

Step 3: Print the application and obtain the signature of the mentor.

Step 4: Take the signed application to Dawson Hall room 224 by Aug. 20.

Non-FACS students must take the following steps:

Step 1: Identify a FACS faculty mentor (see links in step 1 above).

Step 2: Go to this website.

and complete the application form for your particular college.

Step 3: Print the application and obtain the signature of the mentor.

Step 4: Take the signed application back to your college.

If chosen to receive this award, students are required to successfully complete the IRB CITI training modules (if human subjects are involved in the research) and the semester-long research assistantship.

Also, all Undergraduate Research Assistants will be required to present at the spring CURO Symposium on March 30-31, 2015. Participating students may register for CURO research course credit.

Students and faculty may direct questions about eligibility and criteria to FACS Associate Dean Silvia Giraudo at sgiraudo@uga.edu
