Research

I examine food safety education needs, test materials and methods for delivering food safety education to a variety of audiences and measure the impact of educational programs.

Current Research

Teaching

I work with students involved in dietetic internship rotations and practicum experiences on food safety-related projects. I also guest lecture in courses in the Dept. of Foods and Nutrition as requested.

Outreach

I teach people in Georgia as well as other states about food safety, specifically to prevent foodborne illnesses and protect public health.  I develop educational materials and teach a variety of audiences.  This includes programming for youth and adult consumer audiences, training for farmers on small farms and farmers market managers, and mandated food safety training for produce growers who must comply with the Produce Safety Rule that is a part of the Food Safety Modernization Act.  I serve on the Board of Directors for the non-profit Partnership for Food Safety Education in Washington, DC which allows me to be a part of food safety education initiatives that reach nationwide audiences.

Job Description

I coordinate food safety programming for a wide variety of audiences including adult consumers, youth, farmers and farmers' market managers. I develop curricula and educational materials including videos and print materials for use by County Extension agents, offer inservice trainings for Extension Agents, write newsletter articles, and other publications for the public and work with the media to reach audiences with food safety messages.  I collaborate with state and national partners such as the Georgia Dept. of Agriculture, the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service and the Partnership for Food Safety Education to create and implement programs that will help to keep food safe in Georgia and nationwide.
