“Consumer and Housing Policy in Action: Exploring Policies and Programs in Washington, DC”
Description of program: Decisions made in Washington, D.C. affect our lives in Athens, Georgia everyday. The purpose of this program is to provide an in-depth study of consumer and housing programs and policies at the federal level. The emphasis will be on current issues. Students will meet and interact with a variety of private and government officials in Washington, D.C.
While studying in Washington, D.C., students will:
- develop an understanding of the context in which public policy decisions are made
- identify major functions and "hot topics" of government regulatory agencies, advocacy groups, and businesses in the area of housing and consumer economics
- increase knowledge and understanding of public policy related to consumer and housing issues
- experience the public policy process
- develop and strengthen professional behaviors and attitudes
Application and Program Fee Deadlines:
- Application and Deposit of $500 are due by February 2, 2010 by 3:00 p.m.
- Balance of $550 is due April 2, 2010 by 3:00 p.m.
(Students who withdraw from the program may have the fee refunded until May 1, 2010)
Approximate Cost: A program fee of $1050 includes lodging while in Washington, D.C. at George Washington University, metro pass, some sightseeing attractions and events, and some meals. Airfare and personal expenses such as souvenirs, some meals, etc., are not included. Students can anticipant airfares will be around $250 and other out of pocket expenses from $200 to $400. This does NOT include tuition or fees associated with tuition.
Dates: First short session, June 2010 (with one full week in Washington, D.C.)
Courses offered: 3 hours for HACE 5710 and HACE 4900 will also be available for students who might need an additional 3 hours of credit.
