The following is basic information to assist you in your decisions related to the conservation of your antique or historic textiles and clothing pieces. Please visit the links we offer for more information or feel free to contact us with additional questions.

Conservation refers to the idea of retaining what is original in an item by protecting the condition and providing general care for the object. Preservation usually refers to practices and activities conducted in order to maintain the original condition of the object. In general, preservation does not imply any changes to the condition of an item. Restoration refers to the idea of bringing an object back to its original condition or improving that condition; often making the item usable again. It is usually recommended that only reversible techniques are used in the restoration of an item.
