Session: Effective Latino Communication Channels: What are the Best Ways to Reach Latinos?"

Speaker: Dirk Schroder and Clara Olaya

o Issues:
o Intergenerational communication and differences

o How to reach Latino populations (Health Care Professionals)

o Low-income Families Nutrition (mom's and teenagers)

o WIC participants

o Diabetes Training to Latinos

o Educational Level and dialect

o Class attendance/ dedication to education/ barriers

o What are the media channels?
§ Radio, television, newspaper

o Who has need to try to teach?
§ Latino Hispanic stations is being used located in Marietta and Gainesville

o Is there a list of radio stations?

o Hispanic Yellow Pages for Atlanta, Georgia

o Health Fairs is the best place for me to reach Hispanics

§ Fair workers don't have the resources in South Georgia

o Videos was the #1 resource to reach Hispanics as said in 1 of the sessions - video is easier

o Would they be able to relate?

o Jose (?) :We did a project with Caucasian and Hispanic videos and they were able to relate.

o Cassettes and CD's might also be a way to reach people. Music and educational messages within.

o PowerPoint that was graphic intensive. Game format is also successful like (who wants to be a millionaire?) Want to be entertained.

o Churches:
o I offered classes to priest at Catholic Church going on once per week and I meet people on Thursday I am trying to reach people for jobs?
o Have you tried Dept of Labor
o You could try to reach people through newspaper

o One of the barriers is people with degrees who can't work here and have to settle for lesser jobs.

o Word of mouth- don't underestimate the power of that

o Mass media TV, web pages, are also some mediums

o Hospitals are supervised more greater numbers when translated to Spanish

o I think it is the children that are using websites

o Is anybody using child to child in schools?

o 4H would be a way to spread the message

o Has anybody used Dept of Education for Health Literacy?

o teach sexual harassment in schools and you have to build a relationship

o Parent/ Teacher is the best thing to happen to the schools in Cobb County

o Extension does ESL classes

o Novellas?
o That is a wonderful way to reach the Latin community. Health or sickness is a drama and it can be used as a good tool.

o Budget- has this in past?
o Videos are expensive to produce
o Staff to speak the language. Paraprofessionals leave because they are not paid enough.

o Has anybody used pro*?
o Yes, cuc* *

o Has the Mexican been contacted? Why hasn't it been sent here?
o There needs to be some evaluations of what is out that

o Who has a bunch of Spanish materials?
o at UGA I had prepared to do a newsletter and they had to OK these, We have to present what

o I had the same problem. I had one employee from Guatemala and one from Puerto Rico and their translations were totally different.

o Translation is an art and not because someone speaks Spanish doesn't mean they can write it.


o Test with commitment to see if they agree and to what they see.

o Dr. Tango has a button for free to translate certain foods.

o Follow-up activities?

o Times that messages are delivered are important also what gender is going to be watching it at any one time?

o Clara Olson: Research on CDC in Spanish and we are trying to find out how we can help you?
o We are going to be your needs and opinions

o What is going would be responsible?

o At CDC in diabetes we work with states to distribute to various programs

o Why don't we identify those who already have degrees from other and continue to school.

o I think it is best to work at the state level but also at the local level. We have to keep beating the bushes. Building collaboratives

o Any * of health education?
o Hispanic health coalition is one group.

o We need one resource to * to ask her help for Hispanic
o Creating * within different Latin groups

o WIH could be one source of encouragement.
