Session: "Culturally Competent Latino Health Promotion Programs"

Speaker: Lizia Auger

o What is cultural competency?
o Latino only share the language because they are from different countries. Culture must be learned about each country. Generational differences also occur in each culture. Culture is different from ethnicity and racial identification. Respect is key to being culturally competent.

o What are the challenges associated with Hispanic/Latino health promotion programs?
o Competition with many other issues in mainstream America.
o Taking a program and only translate the program into Spanish. Use a professional who knows the culture and the language.
o The differences in how each generation perceives the information within one family.
o Change the mindset of agency officials because of the need for programs after hours in the community.
o Institutional racism which has affected the trust of the Latino population.
o Many families are multigenerational which services are offered differently.
o Policy makers must understand the issues
o What are some of the possible health risk associated with the language barrier between the health care provider and the patient?
o Physicians who have limited Spanish who diagnose and get history with ineffective patient care due to lack of training.
o Pharmacists are not competent in given side effects of prescription drugs in local communities.

o Latino? Hispanic?
o Census determines the classification that does not reflect the true population.
o Political identification of a class of people which does not allow each country to be identified.
o These labels mask the many languages and cultures who do not speak Spanish.
o Leaves out music, culture which does not allow common identification of many foods. Example "orange" has many names in different cultures.

o RESPECT and HOW YOU TREAT PEOPLE will overcome any culture incompetence.

o Health departments are classification sites for poor people which tend to limit its role with the Latino population.

o What are you doing to assist these audiences?
o Even when public services are competent, private medical providers/pharmacists are not prepared for this audience.

o Creating a department in hospitals to educate staff with administrative and medical staff.

o A company in Seattle has a cultural competency training for clinicians. Also MENG is a service available.

o GSU Anthropology has a culture competency course.

o Latino Leadership.org of Washington, D.C. based on issues of need

o www.DHR.state.GA.us
o Spanish and English
o Identifies degrees of cultural identification for your commitment to learning

o www.healthdisparites.com
o Latinos are needed to represent on boards.

o Command Spanish is being offered by many agencies.

o Command English should be available also.

o We do not capture the stories of the families. We little respect given to asking what they want.

o Know your communities' churches and laundromats.

o This conference should include DFCS, Faith agencies and Department of Labor.

o Need a directory of Services for Latinos in Georgia
