Instead of writing a thesis, you will complete a culminating project such as a capstone course, an internship, a research project, or a study away experience to help prepare you for your applied professional career.

We offer five M.S.-NT degree emphases; FHCE advisors and faculty can help you decide which option is right for you.

Financial Planning

This emphasis will develop your expertise in financial planning practice and prepare you to be a client-focused financial planner. After completion of the professional master’s emphasis in Financial Planning you will be prepared to:

  • Help people create and manage wealth
  • Counsel others on tax matters
  • Teach others about personal finance
  • Advise others on transferring wealth
  • Research investment opportunities

Certifications & Opportunities

UGA’s Financial Planning Program is registered with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc., and the Association of Financial Counseling and Planning Education. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC®) examinations.

One of the fastest growing career tracks, financial planners find employment in companies such as investment firms, banks, insurance companies, brokerage firms, and benefits and pension departments of corporation. Others are more entrepreneurial, choosing to establish their own practice.

While in the program, students can have the opportunity to participate in a variety of experiential learning research including the ASPIRE clinic, the Financial Planning Performance Lab, & Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).

Financial Planning classes are also offered online.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must first be admitted by the University of Georgia Graduate School (admission requirements).

As a part of the application process, you will need to submit a Statement of Purpose. This requires that you meet one or more of the following four criteria:

  1. Have an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution in a related discipline with at least a 3.0 GPA. You must also have a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience.
  2. Hold, in good standing, one of the following a designations:
    1. Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
    2. Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU)
    3. Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®)
    4. Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC)
    5. Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)
    6. Applicable FINRA licenses, or equivalent
  3. Completed a minimum of nine credits of graduate course work at a regionally accredited college or university in a related field with a 3.5 GPA or higher; or
  4. Previously earned a graduate degree in a related field.

CFP® Pass Rate

The CFP® exam pass rate for UGA financial planning graduates is about 60%, which is slightly above the national average. In 2017, 24 students sat for the exam. We do not require our students to take the CFP® exam. Unless the student provides permission, the CFP® Board does not provide information about individual students.
