The College of Family and Consumer Sciences can trace its origins back to February 1918, when the Division of Home Economics within the University of Georgia College of Agriculture was approved. The first students enrolled in September 1918. In 2018, the college will celebrate 100 years of offering home economics and family and consumer sciences programming at UGA. This year will be filled with many exciting events!
On Monday, January 15, the College of Family and Consumer Sciences will kick off the centennial year with the Athens MLK Day of Service. Our goal is to display “100 faces of service” on our website – images of FACS students, faculty, staff and alumni participating in volunteer activities.
Please share your MLK Day involvement on social media using the hashtag #FACS100.
Grab your friends and family and join a volunteer project in your community!
The FACS 100 Gala will take place on Saturday, February 24, 2018. This event will be a celebration of the past, present, and the future of family and consumer sciences at UGA, and our mission of strengthening families and communities.
Please join us for a special evening honoring the FACS 100 Centennial Honorees and members of the Honor Hall of Recognition.
One of the many highlights of 2018 will be the publication of a 140-page pictorial history book about the origins and growth of family and consumer sciences at UGA.
The book, “100 Years Enriching Lives: A Pictorial History of Family and Consumer Sciences at UGA” will be available for purchase in summer 2018 and will include photos, timeline information and little-known facts about this amazing history.
Orders will be handled by The University of Georgia Press (www.ugapress.org)
The exhibit, featuring photos and artifacts from the college’s history, will open January 22 and will run through May 18, 2018.
