The department of textiles, merchandising and interiors expresses its condolences to the family of former department head Theresa “Terry” Perenich, who passed away on Jan. 11.
Perenich served as head of the department from 1977-90, retiring in 1999 as professor emerita.
Perenich was named a FACS 100 Centennial Honoree in 2018 for her significant contributions to the college. She was instrumental in establishing the department’s textile science program, which laid the groundwork for today’s polymer and fiber research program.
She was a native New Yorker and the daughter of Italian immigrants. Prior to arriving at UGA, Perenich held roles at the University of Florida, Florida State University, where she received her doctorate in textile science, San Diego State University and Kansas State University.
