Rogers receives national honor from American Society for Nutrition
Connie Rogers, head of the department of nutritional sciences in the UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences, has been named an Excellence in Nutrition Fellow by the American Society for Nutrition.
Rogers, the Bill and June Flatt Chair in Foods and Nutrition within FACS, is one of 69 ASN members who were recognized for their ongoing contributions to the field and sustained engagement in the nutrition community.
Rogers has devoted her career to advancing nutrition science through research, translation and education, with a focus on understanding how diet and physical activity influence immune function and chronic disease risk such as cancer, cardiometabolic disease and bone health.
“I am honored to be recognized by the American Society for Nutrition as an Excellence in Nutrition Fellow,” Rogers said. “My work has focused on research, translation and dissemination of knowledge, driven by a vision of nutrition as a cornerstone of health. This award is a reflection on the many students and faculty who have helped me throughout my career. I’m grateful to be recognized and appreciate the many colleagues who have come alongside me as we continue to focus on improving our understanding of diet and other lifestyle factors in chronic disease prevention and training the next generation to pursue this work.”
Rogers has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including significant work on the interplay between energy balance, immunity and cancer progression, that has helped shape understanding of the immune system in cancer prevention and the gut-immune-bone axis.
She has secured over $5 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and leading foundations in support of her research. Her outreach efforts emphasize evidence-based strategies for cancer prevention, gut health and cardiometabolic wellness.
Rogers also has served as chair of the ASN Diet and Cancer Research Interest Section and has made extensive contributions as an author and reviewer for ASN journals. She currently serves as chair of the Academic Nutrition Departments and Programs community within ASN.
Rogers received a Ph.D. in cell biology and physiology from the University of Pittsburgh and holds master’s degrees in both physiology and public health from Penn State University and the University of Pittsburgh, respectively. Prior to being named department head in FACS in 2022, she served as professor and associate director for the Huck Institutes for the Life Sciences at Penn State University.
Rogers will be recognized at the ASN conference, NUTRITION 2026, in July.
