The Product Development and Design area of emphasis is specifically oriented to prepare you for careers in production and sourcing.

Course Work

The course work is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed for product development and design:

  • Computer Aided Design for Apparel Design and Production 
  • Product Development
  • Global Sourcing
  • Survey of Apparel Manufacturing
  • Study abroad tour to China, Ghana, or London
  • Students can also enroll in the study tour to NYC

Hands-on Experience

We provide you with the opportunity to develop apparel products, to work with designers and manufacturers to produce prototypes and the final product. You can even sell your garments at UGA!

You will also have priority access to product development and design internships with leading companies in the fashion industry. Check out our internship page for more information.

Product Design and Development Lab

The Product Design and Development Lab is located in Room 215 Barrow Hall.  This lab prepares you for product development and design careers. The lab currently houses:

  • 4 Industrial Juki sewing machines
  • 4 Brothers home sewing machines
  • 1 Juki baby lock serger
  • 16 dress forms ranging in sizes
  • Pattern making and draping tools


The Product Development and Design emphasis is an exciting opportunity that we don't want you to miss! We have special scholarships if you decide to pursue the emphasis, and also scholarships to help you with travel costs if you decide to study abroad or participate in your dream internship.  The scholarships are provided by the Georgia Soft Goods Education Foundation, a team of industry leaders that help us keep curriculum and program offerings up-to-date.
