Happy Holidays to you and your family! I want to thank you all for your hard work throughout this fall semester. I appreciate the multiple challenges and stresses everyone is going through and understand the anxiety about planning for next year. However, I also know there are plenty of reasons to be grateful in FACS and lots of exciting things to look forward to! I hope everyone takes advantage of the holiday break to rest and recharge.

FACS Diversity and Inclusive Excellence Planning Group Update

In September 2021, a 16 member FACS Diversity and Inclusive Excellence Planning Working Group was formed to help craft a new college-wide five-year strategic plan around diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging. The group consists of undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, staff, and faculty from every department, the Institute on Human Development and Disability, and the Student Success and Advising Center. A list of working group members is below.

The group met four times during the fall semester and discussed an array of topics primarily focused on how to include the FACS community in plan development. They will continue to meet monthly until May 2022 when the plan is submitted to the Offices of the Provost and President for feedback. Their work is supported by the Dean’s Office and the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development.

In late January and early February, the group will hold open forums and provide opportunities for students, staff, faculty, and alumni to address diversity related issues. If you have any questions, email facsdei@uga.edu. You can visit existing FACS Diversity resources here.

Personnel Transitions

Congratulations to Cal Powell. He has been named Director of External Relations for the college. In this role, Cal will supervise a public relations associate whose primary responsibilities will be graphic design and social media. We hope to fill that position in the coming weeks and will announce the hire in a future college update. Cal will continue to oversee all communications for the college and be involved in the planning of signature events; he also will work in collaboration with Director of Development Patricia White and the Director of Alumni Relations to lead and shape communications designed to increase engagement with both internal and external audiences.

FCS Day 2021: FCS Ties it All Together

On December 3rd, AAFCS hosted this virtual event. EllynAnne Geisel (apron curator and author) and Dan Wagner (FCS teacher) were the featured speakers. Students and professionals showed their creativity by submitting photos with their stories, designs, and healthy recipes. If you missed the event, you can watch the recording. Click here to access the PDU certificate for the event.

Check out the special virtual issue of the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal focused on FCS Day 2021! Articles were chosen from previous issues of FCSRJ to show the breadth of FCS as well as the interconnectedness between the content areas. This issue features articles that “tie together” nutrition and parenting, gerontology and textiles, health and furnishing textiles, families in crisis and interior design, and parenting and finance. These articles also exemplify the different types of research that “tie together” FCS, from qualitative research to quantitative research to in-depth literature reviews.

Watch the AAFCS website for upcoming events in 2022.
