1. BEAP Development Validation and Training

Each occupied University building must have a Building Emergency Action Plan (BEAP) that prepares the building occupants for possible emergency situations. The primary Building Safety and Security Representative (BSSR) coordinates the development of the BEAP with representatives from each department.

Once completed, the BEAP is reviewed by the Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP). After approval, BSSRs distribute the BEAP to all departments. Building occupants should become familiar with evacuation routes, shelter areas, assembly areas, and identify persons needing assistance.

1.a Training of Building Staff – Drills and Exercises

Departments must ensure employees are trained on the BEAP. OEP can assist with training. Each building should conduct at least one fire drill per year, coordinated with UGA Fire Safety Office (706‑369‑5706). UGA participates in a statewide tornado drill each February.

6. Building Hazards / Areas of Special Concern

Windows have paint preventing them from opening. Asbestos signage is present but only hazardous if walls or floors are disturbed.

Special Instructions: Stairs at front door; ramp at back door; basement has only one exit.

7. Emergency Evacuation Instructions for People with Disabilities

UGA OEP encourages proactive planning. Individuals needing assistance should complete an Emergency Assistance Referral Form (EARF):

  • Check exit route accessibility
  • Ensure communication methods for special‑needs occupants
  • Guidance for visually impaired, hearing impaired, mobility‑limited, and wheelchair users

9. Fire

  • Evacuate immediately
  • Call 911
  • Do not use elevators
  • Turn off lab gas valves if safe
  • Assist individuals needing help
  • Do not re‑enter until cleared

10. Medical Emergencies

  • Provide dispatcher with details
  • Send someone to meet responders
  • Do not move injured persons unless necessary
  • Provide first aid if trained

  • Move to interior rooms away from windows
  • Do not pull fire alarm
