Whether you are an Athens local or a resident of Georgia elsewhere, UGA’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is here to serve you by filing your tax return for free.
Since 2006, the University of Georgia’s College of Family and Consumer Sciences has collaborated with the Internal Revenue Service to provide the VITA program to the Athens community. The program has evolved, partnering with UGA Cooperative Extension offices throughout the state to expand free tax filing services to communities throughout Georgia.

Your county agent will then send your documents via encrypted email to student volunteers on UGA’s campus. Students will prepare your tax return in preparation for your virtual meeting to review and file your tax return.
Our statewide tax services have concluded for 2021. Keep in mind that appointments fill up fast! Find a participating UGA VITA site near your to plan for the next tax season.
